Sports-Themed Summer Picnic
A themed picnic is always exceptionally fun to plan – every bit as fun as it is to be a guest at! When Bobrick, a washroom accessories manufacturer, contacted us to plan a Sports themed picnic for their staff and their families, we have to admit, we were excited. Sports themes are not only good for team building, but playing sports as a group has noticeable benefits for people’s wellness. We can see why; it’s always easier to let loose and become active in a team game.
Bobrick values their employees and their loved ones, and knows the importance of a bonded, interconnected team. The Sports themed picnic was a perfect way to bring their staff even closer together and give them a day of fun to kick back at. Together, we laid plans for a vast assortment of team building-focused field games (see some of our favorites here), inflatable entertainment, and plenty of fun for everyone.
A Perfect Day for a Summer Picnic
It was a beautiful summer morning when we arrived at the picnic location, a longtime favorite of both ours and Bobrick’s. The scene for the day was warm, vibrant, and summery at a gorgeous Elysian Park picnic area: the perfect spot for a company picnic in Los Angeles. The grass seems to practically glow this time of year, especially in the morning sunlight, a vibrant green unlike any other time of year. It was just barely daybreak when we arrived, the sun pale, and the dew clinging to each blade made it glow all the more.
We had plenty of work to do to prepare, setting up a variety of entertainment, booths, and stations. Our staff set to work inflating bouncers, setting up game tables, and readying picnic tables for Bobrick’s team. An assortment of team building activities were planned, a little something for everyone, centered around sports. So too, did they plan passive activities, which you can learn more about here.
Game On!
Our morning flew by as we readied everything and made sure each detail was perfect for the day. By 10:30 that morning, the picnic began. As our guests made their way in, they were greeted with plenty of game stations as well as the smell of that afternoon’s lunch. Suddenly, the park sprang to life. Whenever there’s a crowd, a location seems to do that. The people really do make the event, and once there’s people, the game is on.
Speaking of games, Bobrick had planned an action-packed day for their staff and families to enjoy. We’d arranged some standalone games, some friendly team building field competitions, and some passive games. For the game table enthusiasts, we’d brought in foosball, ping pong, and air hockey. These games, we feel, are great to mingle and network over, making them a great addition to any staff outing. For the inflatables side of things, we’d brought in a bounce house, soccer darts, Connect-3 basketball, our inflatable ax throwing game, and two obstacle courses.
The crowd moved like waves in the ocean, to and fro between the game booths. We had 400 attendees, making this moment a sight to behold. The park filled with laughter, cheers, and conversation. It’s moments like these that touch each of us to see.
Making Forever Memories
At this summer picnic, we had plenty of things for guests to do. Besides the inflatables and game tables, we’d brought in a facepainter, caricature artist, airbrush tattoo artist, and two arts and crafts stations. Bobrick wanted their guests to have plenty of keepsakes, and we felt that art, be it on their skin or on paper, self-made or artist-made, was an amazing way to highlight memories. To ensure these memories never washed away, we brought in a photo booth so they could photograph the face paint or airbrush tattoo they received as a keepsake.
Those weren’t the only keepsakes Bobrick had brought in for their team. We handed out visors at registration for every employee to wear. Bobrick had also planned a raffle for that day, with plenty of prizes their team would enjoy. We feel that raffles are a great way to get guests pumped at a picnic, every bit as much as field game competitions. (We have some of our favorite raffle ideas listed in this article!) They’re not only a great passive-engagement style activity, but a great way to keep the momentum and excitement coursing through every company picnic.
Fun for Every Play Style
We had arranged plenty of team building games, too, for guests to enjoy. Outside of the field game competitions in which guests competed at things like musical circles or a hula hoop competition, we’d also arranged games of tee ball. Field games are a valuable part of a family and staff picnic, giving guests a chance to bond over a challenge or activity, making lasting memories together as they do. Today was no different, and we watched on as the crowd connected with one another at each game they played.
For guests with physical limitations, or anyone tired from playing sports that day, we’d brought in a couple of passive activities to ensure everyone at the picnic could take part. We had a relaxing and fun game of bingo as well as a sports trivia competition. Many of the guests were wearing gear to rep their favorite sports teams, and we had a sneaking suspicion that this trivia topic was one each of them would be great at.
Once guests worked up an appetite from playing sports, we had a huge picnic lunch ready for them. Today, we served our Premier menu. Our catering team flame grilled choice meat over woodsmoke, from delectable tri-tip to mouthwatering barbeque ribs to some seriously incredible teriyaki chicken. We’d included classic cookout foods, too, like burgers and hotdogs, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. So, too, did our team whip up some corn on the cob and delicious potato salad for some classic picnic sides. We’d also brought in novelty ice cream makers and freshly baked cookies, for guests with a sweet tooth to enjoy.
One Perfect Summer Picnic
The day was a whirlwind of fun and excitement for both ourselves and our picnic guests. They say time flies when you’re having fun, and we completely agree! When you’re swept up in the action of a day like this, the afternoon comes in a hurry. By the time the raffle tickets were drawn, and the sun began to ease towards the horizon, we were amazed at how true that old saying is.
As this amazing summer picnic came to a close, and our shuttle crew boarded the final passenger, we felt this sports-themed picnic had been truly special.
We knew the team games had strengthened the bonds among Bobrick’s staff and we felt we’d given them the day of fun, excitement, and games their leadership had wanted them to have. We knew we wouldn’t soon forget this day, and we believed the staff and their families felt the same way.
Even as the park returned to the stillness and emptiness it had been when we arrived, we held joy in our hearts for a job well done. And in that moment, we felt invigorated. We looked forward to the next.
