Team Building Activities for Aerospace Employees

Paper Plane Contest

What better way to kick off an aerospace team building day than to hold a paper airplane contest? This challenge can have different objectives depending on how you want to play; the fastest flier, the furthest flying, or any other goals you’d like your team to achieve. All that’s needed is some materials to construct the planes and one finish line.

You’ll Need:

  • A4 Paper
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Tape for Finish Line
  • (Optional) Markers to Decorate Planes

Soda Bottle Rocket Contest

Like the typical soda bottle rocket experiments many of us did as kids, this contest requires empty soda bottles with vinegar poured into them, and a “time-release packet” made from baking soda poured on small squares of soft paper to time its “launch” just so. However, for our purposes, this “rocket launch” comes with a contest aspect: whose rocket gets launched the furthest? Those working in the space industry will surely appreciate the challenge, and who else would be better suited to hold this type of contest?

You’ll Need:

  • Corks
  • Soda Bottles (2-liter is best!)
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Small Squares of Tissue or Toilet Paper
  • Funnel

Saturn Ring Toss

Touching on the space industry in a less obvious way, the Saturn Ring Toss is played by attempting to throw Saturn’s hoop “rings” around the planet, represented by a beach ball. This game is perfect partner for beachside company picnics, and those working in the space industry may appreciate the nod to their profession.

You’ll Need:

  • Beach Balls
  • Hula Hoops

RC Helicopter Race

To touch on your aerospace team’s profession, why not hold a remote control helicopter race? Teams will compete to get their craft across the finish line first. Anyone, but especially those working in the aircraft industry, is sure to love this simple, timeless game.

You’ll Need:

  • Remote Control Helicopters
  • Finish Line Tape

Model Rocket Race

In this game, each team will be assigned a workstation and given basic construction materials to build a rocket under a time constraint. After building the rocket, a member of the team will take it to place in the hoop “launch pad”. The first team to fully assemble their rocket and get it on the “launch pad” wins this race. This is a simple game touching on the space industry that can exercise your teams’ collaborative skills.

You’ll Need:

  • Hoop
  • Scissors
  • Construction Paper or Cardstock
  • Tape or Glue
  • Timer

High Flyer’s Relay Race

Played like a typical relay race, this game has a twist touching on the aerospace industry. Players must don their moon bounce shoes to run the relay. As with any relay race, the first team to complete it wins.

You’ll Need:

  • Moon Bounce Shoes
  • Baton
  • Finish Line Tape

Kite Race

Your aerospace workers may know about aircraft, but do they know about building kites? In this race, teams must assemble kite kits as quickly as possible. The first team to get their kite airborne wins the race!

You’ll Need:

  • Hoops
  • Construction Paper
  • Tap

Fold and Fly

Each team is provided with the materials needed to make paper airplanes. Optionally, you can give enough for each team member to make their own plane and turn it into a relay race, or just enough for one. Once the plane(s) are constructed, players must send them flying through an elevated hoop. The first team to not only construct their plane but get it through the hoop wins this race.

You’ll Need:

  • Hoops
  • Construction Paper
  • Tape
