7 Team Building Activities for Aerospace Employees

1. Fold and Fly

  • 5 Minutes
  • Teams of 2+
  • Low Cost
  • Very Easy

About This Contest

What better way to kick off an aerospace team building day than to hold a paper airplane contest? This challenge can have different objectives depending on how you want to play; the fastest flier, the furthest flying, or any other goals you’d like your team to achieve. All that’s needed is some materials to construct the planes and one finish line.

The best part is this budget-friendly team building game is great for adults and kids alike. Create parent-child teams for Bring-Your-Kid-to-Work Day or run in teams of any size.

Optionally, you can give enough for each team member to make their own plane and turn it into a relay race, or just enough for one.

You’ll Need:

  • A4 Paper
  • Tape
  • Markers (optional)
  • Hoops/Fans (optional)

Judging Criteria: Choose one or more criteria:

  • Distance: Measure the distance the plane travels.
  • Flight Time: Time how long the plane stays in the air.
  • Aerobatics: Award points for tricks like loops or spins.
  • Accuracy: Aim for a specific target or zone
  • Design: Win points for most creative design.

Pro Tip: Add large fans, go outdoors or add hula hoops/marked flight paths for additional challenges for adults.

2. Soda Bottle Rocket Contest

  • 10 Minutes
  • Teams of 4+
  • Low Cost
  • Very Easy

About This Activity

Like the typical soda bottle rocket experiments many of us did as kids, this contest requires empty soda bottles with vinegar poured into them, and a “time-release packet” made from baking soda poured on small squares of soft paper to time its “launch” just so. However, for our purposes, this “rocket launch” comes with a contest aspect: whose rocket gets launched the furthest? Those working in the space industry will surely appreciate the challenge, and who else would be better suited to hold this type of contest?

You’ll Need:

  • Corks
  • Soda Bottles (2-liter is best!)
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Small Squares of Tissue or Toilet Paper
  • Funnel

Pro Tip: Add more supplies and time limits for more complex builds!

3. Saturn Ring Toss

  • 5 Minutes
  • Teams of 5+
  • Med Cost
  • Easy

About This Game

Touching on the space industry, the Saturn Ring Toss is played by attempting to throw Saturn’s hoop “rings” around the planet, represented by a beach ball.  Prep the area by marking each team’s placement with an X and a cone as the sun. One team member holds the ball in the center while even number gathers around (4+) to toss the ring around the center team member.

For added difficulty, the center team member should “obit” the sun (designated by the cone) while the ring players should attempt to keep their orbit around the moving planet. First team to complete a successful  year around the sun wins! This game is perfect partner for beach side company picnics, and those working in the space industry may appreciate the nod to their profession.

You’ll Need:

  • Beach Balls
  • Hula Hoops
  • Tape

Pro Tip: For extra fun (and more of a challenge) have each person hula hoop before passing the ring to the next person!

Anyone, but especially those working in the aircraft industry, is sure to love this simple, timeless game. Whittier Narrows Picnic Area is ideal for this, as it has a dedicated RC helicopter course!

You’ll Need:

  • Remote Control Helicopters

Pro Tip: Give staff a payload to carry to the finish line for extra skill!

  • 15 Minutes
  • Teams of 4+
  • Low Cost
  • Easy

About This Race

In this game, each team will be assigned a workstation and given basic construction materials to build a rocket under a time constraint. After building the rocket, a member of the team will take it to place in the hoop “launch pad”. The first team to fully assemble their rocket and get it on the “launch pad” wins this race. This is a simple game touching on the space industry that can exercise your teams’ collaborative skills.
