A Classic Company Picnic
It was a warm summer afternoon in beautiful California when we planned a company picnic for a local medical company. We’d be preparing an exciting picnic in gorgeous Long Beach for their team, which would be full of fun and games.
Our client was Prospect Medical, whose mission of accessibility and community effort is driven by a collaborative environment for their staff. We planned to highlight the collaborative environment today through an incredible Old Fashioned picnic.
Collaborative games and a sense of community would permeate every inch of the park and every minute of the picnic. Our client wanted to give back to the team that has done so much for not only the company but the communities of Southern California.
Transforming the Park
We arrived at El Dorado Park East in Long Beach on a beautiful, mild day. This park is one of our favorites for company picnics in the area. Down a long drive, the park is tucked away, offering a sense of privacy. Its secluded location means that, once attendees enter, they feel the picnic is a world all to itself. The grassy lawns and wide open spaces are ideal for setting up entertainment and hosting field games.
Today, our team began by setting up registration booths, games, and inflatables while others began firing up their grills. This old-fashioned picnic would involve plenty of classic, delicious picnic foods for our attendees to enjoy between rounds of field games and other activities.
The park quickly took the shape of a picnic wonderland. Colorful inflatables reached to the sky, brightly canopied booths for face painters and caricaturists stood beckoning for visitors. The smell of delicious food wafted through the air, coupled with the blue skies overhead, to create a sensory masterpiece.
The Picnic Begins
Once the setup was complete, our team took their positions to man games or inflatables, cover registration, or prepare to bus the trash. Before long, at noon sharp, our attendees began filing into the park. Smiles abound on faces, chatter and laughter filled the air as families made their way to the registration area. Our team brought iPads to speed up the process and reduce paper usage. Once their brightly-colored wristbands had been secured around their arms, the groups were ready to make their way into the celebration.
Our game leader greeted the guests as they entered. The park sprang to life. The sounds of joy and excitement were palpable in the warm air, the breeze carrying them far and wide across the area. 900 guests filled the vast open space, bustling to and fro, conversing with loved ones and colleagues alike. There was so much to do at today’s picnic.
Some guests went to the buffet when it opened, ready to try out the classic picnic catering. The menu included hotdogs and hamburgers (beef, turkey, and veggie alike), grilled chicken, tri-tip, and plenty of tasty sides. Baked beans, creamy potato salad, and a fresh garden salad were up for grabs. Meanwhile, cookies and desserts were also ready for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Having Fun Together
Other attendees found themselves trying out our variety of inflatables. If they sought a challenge, we had the towering double bay slide and play center or the Extreme Obstacle Course, which could accommodate plenty of folks to compete against each other. We had a play center the right size for the younger guests, and we had three excellent choices for the sports lovers. A soccer kick game beckoned guests to try their best kick while a baseball speed pitch stood ready for their best throw. Finally, a football toss challenged guests to give their best and try to knock down targets with their ball.
Meanwhile, cheers and laughter filled the air from the Viking Ax Throw, where groups gathered to watch one another give their all.
We also had plenty of classic company picnic games perfect for relaxing. Guests bonded and mingled while they played a round of cornhole, cheering each other on. A giant Jenga game filled the area with the sound of laughter and camaraderie as wooden blocks toppled over. A giant connect-four game gave guests young and old a challenge, its oversized, colorful pieces sinking into their spots with a satisfying clack.
Field Game Competitions
When the field game competition opened, guests rallied around, excited to partake. Today’s field games involved many fun activities for collaboration and bonding.
From a water balloon toss to a champagne relay, there was fun for all ages and play styles. Guests cheered for their friends and family as a game of Tug-o-War started. Shouts of encouragement sprang up, the crowd rooting for the players. Next, guests played some minute-to-win-it games, a quick but fun challenge perfect for bonding through.
The crowd went wild as a game of Bucket Brigade started, ideal for a summer afternoon. During the potato sack race, the park was filled with cheers and encouragement for the competitors.
Once the cup stack game started, more cheers rang out as guests competed to see who stacked all the cups first.
Painting & Pups
There was even more to do at this picnic. Folks looking to have a keepsake made grabbed their loved ones and friends and headed to the caricature artist. Skillful and masterful portraits done on iPads made memories come to life. Others looking to capture the moment gathered in the photobooths, snapping pictures with their loved ones or colleagues.
Other groups made their way to the face painting artists for airbrushed designs. The artists worked skillfully on each person. Gorgeous designs in vibrant colors soon decorated the smiling faces of attendees.
A pooch parade made another unique highlight for the event. Adorable dogs of all shapes and sizes strutted proudly through the park, their owners smiling proudly, too. Up for grabs for the parade were plenty of prizes donated by healthcare providers. Smiles, cheers, and laughter filled the air, the crowd enjoying the parade as much as its participants.
Giving Back Always
At the event, Prospect Medical also brought in a tent staffed by the pharmacy team to give out flu shots. Giving back to their team and community involves health-conscious and preventative measures. The company wanted their team to stay well and happy, not just now, but always.
Nearby was a trivia booth where teams could go and participate The laidback activity was fun for all, especially those who needed a rest during the high-energy games for the day. Laughter and cheers filled the air from it, bringing smiles to our faces from our stations around the park.
The sun began to dip lower in the sky, its afternoon light bathing the park in a golden hue. The picnic was nearly ending, but the guests were still as merry as ever. We felt that this team had experienced the community and recognition so hoped for through this fun, exciting, and unforgettable day out.
One Unforgettable Picnic
The picnic wound to a close at 5:00, with our attendees making their way to the park exit.
Their faces were bright and joyous, their skin adorned with art, clutching in their wristband-clad hands keepsakes from the day.
As the park emptied, the golden hue from the sky grew bronze.
Birdsong replaced the sounds of laughter and conversation, and the park took on a stillness.
We were full of smiles, our hearts alight with joy, as we pulled up staking and sandbags and folded up booths and canopies.
This day had been the perfect company picnic for this irreplaceable team and their loved ones. It was a picnic we, like they, wouldn’t soon forget.
